Our History
Larry and Joyce Banister established Banister Funeral Home of Dahlonega in May of
1984. Larry Banister was a third generation funeral director and Joyce was a licensed
cosmetologist Joyce was a native of Lumpkin County and always wanted to return to her
childhood home and have a funeral home here.

Larry started his funeral career at Henry M. Blanchard and Son Funeral Home in Atlanta in
1965. After a tour of duty in the U.S. Air Force he returned home in 1969 and went to work
in the family funeral home, Banister Funeral Home in Dawsonville.

Larry graduated from Gupton-Jones College of Funeral Service in 1971 and has been a
licensed funeral director and embalmer for many years.

Joyce was a master cosmetologist and had her own shop for several years before
devoting all of her time to funeral service.

Larry and Joyce married in 1977. In 1984, Larry and Joyce realized their dream of having a
funeral home in Dahlonega.

In 1991 Larry and Joyce sold the funeral home in Dawsonville to Ted Bearden and he
continues to operate this funeral home as Bearden Funeral Home of Dawsonville. This
allowed Larry and Joyce to devote their full energy to serving the people in the
Dahlonega-Lumpkin County area.

Banister Funeral Home has faithfully served the people of this area since May of 1984

Larry is presently serving in his second term as Lumpkin County Coroner.

Joyce was very active in community affairs until she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis
in 2000. She is no longer able to be active in the business.

At Banister Funeral Home, we believe in giving the best possible service to each family
that we serve. No two families are alike. Each family is special to us.
