Mr. Charles H. “Chuck” Phillips, age 90, of Dahlonega, GA, passed away Saturday, January 23, 2010 at his home in Dahlonega with his family at his side.

 

Chuck was born in Forsyth, County, GA November 4, 1919. He lived most of his life in Dahlonega.

 

He served as Postmaster at the Dahlonega Post Office, retiring after 25 years of service.

 

He was the last remaining member of the first Lumpkin County High School graduating class.

 

Chuck attended North Georgia College for two years before being drafted into the Army Air Corps in WWII. He was a pilot and flew cargo missions in the China-Burma-India Theater with the Flying Tigers where he obtained the rank of Captain. He was recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with 4 Battle Stars & 2 Overseas Bars, and American Theater Ribbon.

 

He was a member of Blue Mountain Lodge # 38 F & AM in Dahlonega, York Rite Chapter #64, Yaarab Temple Shrine Club, Atlanta, and was a former Commander of American Legion Post 239 in Dahlonega.

 

He was the son of the late Joseph Henry Phillips and Madeline Jordan Phillips and was also preceded in death by wives, Mamie Burns Phillips and Virginia Betsill Phillips, brother and sister-in-law, Wint and Kathryn Phillips.

 

Chuck is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Greg Pierce, Dahlonega, GA; grandchildren Holly Pierce and Katie Pierce; nephews, John and Scott Phillips, both of Dahlonega. A number of other relatives also survive.

 

A graveside funeral service for Mr. Phillips is scheduled for 11 AM Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Dahlonega with Col(Ret) Haines Hill officiating.

 

The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega on Monday from 5 PM until 8 PM.
